From the article: Canada Travel Destinations You May Not Know
Canada is a big, wonderful country with countless towns, villages, and islands that can be easily missed while visiting the larger, more popular destinations. Sometimes the best travel experiences are off the beaten path. Have you discovered a gem during your Canada travels? Somewhere that's not Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal? Wakefield, Quebec
- Wakefield is a picturesque little town 30 minutes from Ottawa. It has a thriving arts community, cafes, pubs, galleries, covered bridge, heritage mill, two rivers, natural spring, spa, and numerous outdoor activities like swimming, horseback riding, skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, golf, canoeing and kayaking. Former Canadian prime minister and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Lester B. Pearson, is buried in MacLaren Cemetery in Wakefield (the site provides a wonderful glimpse into Canadian modesty and reserve).

St Pierre and Miquelon Islands
- Off the south coast of Newfoundland, about an hour by ferry. The moment you put foot on land, you know you're not in Canada or the US. It is totally French; definitely worth a visit. (Access is via Canada, but these islands are still part of France.)

Dundas, Ontario
- I visited friends in their hometown of Dundas, which is about an hour away from Toronto. It has retained a bustling main street - the kind where drivers stop out of the blue to let pedestrians cross. It also has a bakery, tea room, butcher - a dying breed of shops in the days of Price Club and big box stores. Lovely.

For Wine Lovers
- We stopped at a charming, little town called Jordan in the Niagara Wine Region, close to Niagara Falls, but on the way to Toronto. After a little shopping, we went to the Cave Springs winery restaurant - On the Twenty - which proved to be the perfect rest-stop before getting back on the highway.
