Now I understand why I couldn't find a hotel room anywhere in Toronto this weekend, despite starting to look a month ago.
The Vanier Cup, the Canadian university football championships, and the Grey Cup, the Canadian Football League (CFL) championship game, share the spotlight in Toronto this weekend.
The partnership between the two football leagues in choosing the same playoff location is an obvious win for fans of the sport and a coup for Toronto hotels. However it drove us out of province to Montreal in order for a family getaway.
Turns out Montreal (and Quebec City, I hear) are hot spots too this weekend with plenty of Americans escaping the hub bub of Thanksgiving celebrations in their own country. I did not know about this travel trend, but was told by a few Montreal retailers that they've seen an increase in the number of visitors from New England and New York State over the Thanksgiving weekend.
So in 2013, beware the Grey Cup weekend in Regina (Vanier Cup location to be officially announced) and book early in major Canadian cities during American Thanksgiving.
