Americans Do Not Need Passport to Cross Canadian Border

Thursday May 25, 2006
There's a lot of talk on this topic these days, but the fact remains that Americans crossing the border to visit Canada do not need a passport . . . . for now.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which will require American citizens to present a passport to cross the Canadian border is slated to come into effect January 1, 2008.

As part of the new Immigration Bill, the US Senate has delayed this date until June 1, 2009. For this new date to come into effect, the US House of Representatives must pass the same measure.

What are Canadians living in the U.S. as Resident Aliens (”Green Card” holders) going to need to cross the Canadian border and return to U.S. There are thousands of us and I haven’t seen this issue addressed. Thanks Leon Abrams
